Business in the World of Evil

Biomechanical Terror Inc., sent a request for a proposal to develop a "Raptorbot" based on Velociraptors. Bipedal robotics are nearing a state of technolical advancement where this becomes tantalizingly feasible.

They desire speed, and stability, with bite and claw. The predictable. Herpatology is still down after the Warbaboons somehow got loose..., so My name showed up on a short list of rainmakers.

My proposal was to dump Raptorbots ("craptorbots"), and evaluate the design possibilities of Phorusrhacidae - Terror Birds. A piston driven beak strike with the accompanying biting capability makes this far superior. The balance is done without tail, etc. Plus, fossils exist, and cloning might one day be possible, as a side benefit of research.

Strictly mechanically, the avian biped is structurally more suited for this platform.

Needless to say, they were impressed. Doing some research and diagrams, maybe some draftwork, for a Development Pitch.

This Could lead to the DARPA Goodie Room of unlimited Funding! And eventual Malignobot enhancement.

Early problem both platforms suffer from, is the lack of binocular vision. Still - not necessarily a weakness.

Polychomatic feathers as camouflage? Jumping? Getting back on it's feet when knocked down. Cooling systems will be Huge; to move the weight plus fuel (batteries) at speed will create friction heat One doesn't want to calculate. Maybe it walks, but then homes in on targets at speed for short bursts?

    • Vic Tim Gadgeteer Have you seen the robot dogs that can run on all fours? There is a Youtube video somewhere. Scary as hell. Cross between the Terminator and something out of Raccoon City.

    • Lord Malignance Ahh. Big dog and little dog One has heard of (DARPA Funding). The cheetah is new though. Thank you.

    • SilverViper Mga A raptor-bot, based on the size and ferocity of those in the film "Jurrasic Park", would be a true terror to any bistander--RLSH included.

    • Lord Malignance Some considerations;
      Velociraptors were ~6' with tails at least as long.

      The Terror Birds could be ~10', and the feathers can be used as vanes to vent the friction heat. They might even be able to sit, head down for minimal space profile in transport, and maintenance. A lot of plastics to reduce the weight. One can't design a proper neck though, and it Is quite long and flexible. The Raptor is superior in this respect. It has to be able to raise and lower, and pan left and right. Then lock into the bite/strike position when needed.

    • Lord Malignance BTI, better known by their Portuguese translation, is BIG in South America, and Central America. Whenever you hear a story of Cryptids, or "Secret CIA Labs" down there, it was likely them. In the Trade, your rumors are all* the fame you'll ever know.

      * Government contracts and secrets shared make this a necessity.

If you've been following Medo Biomecânica Incorporado in the Villainous Business Trades, you'll know they gave us the Chupacabra among many others.

Fine work all.

But when a contract came in, for a bit of outsourcing they were considering, One leapt at the opportunity. Ok, One was roped into it, but the travel might be nice. If One gets the contract. And Since so much of what MBI (aka BTI) does in South America, is funded and supported by certain clandestine organizations in the US, it might turn into the Golden Ticket to the Goodie Room of Unlimited DARPA Funding.

Some preliminary research on the Terror Bird mechanical operations;

And pretty much what the project intends to produce*;
